President Sarah welcomed members and introduced guests. Welcome to Marty, Elsie, Gayle, Diane, and Lisa.

A special guest from Council of 101, Marilyn, visited to explain how the organization works. Council of 101 started more than 30 years ago as a way to raise funds for the Orlando Modern Art Museum. The Festival of Trees is their biggest fundraiser of the year and they are very appreciative of our contribution each year. With 100 volunteers, they run a boutique, sell trees, and raffle tickets for donated items during the event. Donation and their efforts aide in community outreach and in bringing special exhibits to the museum.

 Jane and Zonetta planned the icebreaker to encourage each member to have a nametag by the next meeting. The mission was for members to find someone they didn't know, talk for 3 minutes, with the goal to make a nametag for them. It was kinda like speed-dating. Those pairs of members will then make nametags for each other and bring them to the September meeting. They must have your first name, be legible, and wearable. 

Sarah announced that the Guild will be participating in the OCLS Fiber Festival, Sunday September 30 from 2-4 at the Orange County Public Library. We will have a table with sewing demos. There is also a Fiber Arts Contest with a prize of $250. More information can be found in

The Guild will also be participating in the Maitland Rotary Festival, November 17-18. This will be similar to our participation in Art:31 where we are set up in the Waterhouse to demo quilt making. More information will be shared as the date draws near.

 August's Block of the Month by Alejandrina is a Simple Butterfly in 3 sizes.

Ede shared the progress of her Skillbuilder Quilt-a-long

. You can still join this group and work at your own pace if you are interested.

Paula shared about the progress of the outside interest groups and bees. The 3 Improv Bee groups are busy and 2 of them are full until Feb. 2019. If you are interested in joining, Sarah's group, the Green Bees have a spot open.

EPP, English Paper Piecing with Rene has several groups that meet throughout the month and is always open for new members.

Scan and Cut Club with Beth meets regularly and is always open for new members.

Paper Foundation Piecing with Beth meets regularly and is always open for new members.

Many more placemats were collected for Meals on Wheels. They are giving out as birthday presents. At least 200 placemats have been given to this organization.

Kate is in charge of Festival of Trees and that committee is making a lot of progress. 

Samaritan Village quilts are wrapping up and due in September. The Trunk Show for the Assisted Living Facility will be soon and lap quilts will be raffled off. Beth is still collected 10" hst in white and bright.

 The QuiltCon Charity Quilt designed by Alissa was shared. Block kits were passed out and are due at the September meeting. The kit includes colored stripes and a 9.5" purple square. Sew colored stripes together however you wish and then cut and insert in the purple square. Finished block is minimum 9.5" but do not trim. Look for a blog post detailing the steps.

Caroline selected #4 for the next project to work on for the next 2 months.

Dar won the prize for completing project #1.

Zonetta gave the Treasurers report.

Alissa gave the report since Patti could not attend. Spots are still open for Melissa's classes in September. Alissa took her class at QuiltCon and loved it.

Marge spoke about the Retreat November 9-12. If you plan to attend, book your room now to help with the committees plans. It will be lots of fun, door prizes, and surprises in store.

Alissa returned the Quilty Basket and it was won by Karen.

Beth shared a tip on adding borders without getting stretched or distorted. Measure the middle of the quilt to get correct size for borders. Pin borders in middle and end to be sure the piece isn't getting stretched as you stitch.

Debra shared her technique via video by Paula for blocking a quilt that isn't the exact size you planned once quilted. This works if an edge is just fractions of an inch off. Use tape to mark out the size your quilt should be. Tape your quilt to the floor using painter's tape. Then using a squirt bottle, wet the area of the quilt that needs to be stretched. Then move into place, tape and let dry. Look for a future blog post and more details about all techniques. You can watch the video

Alejandrina shared her technique of attaching binding. Overlap the beginning and end of binding by the same length as the width of the binding. Use a clip to bunch up extra quilt to make it easier to connect the binding ends.

Mary Sm shared her technique for attaching binding. 

Alissa shared her technique for making a flange in the binding. The main color of the binding is 1.5" wide and the flange fabric is 1.75" wide. Sew strips together. Iron in half and sew to back of quilt and then flip to front. Stitch on top with same color thread as flange.

Linda shared her technique of attaching binding with wash away thread. Attach binding to back of quilt and use wash away thread in bobbin.

Beth shared her technique of using the quilt backing for the binding. Make the backing 1" larger on all sides. Fold in half so it aligns with edge of quilt and then fold in half again and press. Mark from edge of top and batting and measure 1" in and fold corner in and pin, then fold next edge over so you get a mitered corner.
